“If everybody just does standing orders everything would be solved.”

24-11-2020

One of the common positives we heard over the last six months is that more and more people are giving to their church via Standing Orders and Direct Debit. This is great for the church, providing a reliable and steady source of income. However, based on the research we have done we know this form of planned giving has downsides that are felt primarily by the congregation.

To start, people who give monthly also have a need to contribute in the service (even if it is just a little), as it is part of the experience so the sterile monthly giving doesn’t meet this emotional need. Giving should bring enjoyment, monthly giving doesn’t. Secondly, if people are only ever giving through their bank each month then younger people are never confronted with giving and don’t learn its importance. We have heard this point echoed from many church leaders who fear for the future of giving, particularly amongst the young. Finally, as givers there is a need to participate each week with a collection, if only giving through the bank then this relationship with the church changes.

Givt lets people experience giving and brings some of the emotional enjoyment back to the act. We have even seen that Givt puts giving front-of-mind for people which has led to people giving more, both through the app and increasing their SO’s.
